Dish Network vs. DirecTV: Pricing

Hmmm, let’s see… you can get 315 channels for $66.44 with Dish Network or 21% fewer channels for a 30% higher price ($93.99) with DirecTV. With every single comparable channel package, Dish Network drastically beats the price of DirecTV. Whether you need the super-mega-deluxe channel pack or a just a few channels, the Best Buy here in the competition of Dish Network vs. DirecTV is most definitely Dish Network.

Dish Network vs. DirecTV: Selection

Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer all of the favorite movie channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, etc. Both offer HD programming, but Dish Network outnumbers DirecTV in number of HD channels, beating them 25 to 8.

The big difference in terms of selection is the variety of packages. DirecTV’s lowest package costs $41.99 for 155 channels – but what if you don’t want to spend an entire program period flipping clicking the remote? For you, Dish Network offers a nice “little” package of 70 channels for a $19.99 a month. If you want to kick your program selection up a notch, Dish Network offers a $29.95 subscription for 235 channels (80 more channels than with DirecTV’s $41.99 per month subscription).

One perk that DirecTV offers that Dish Network doesn’t is NFL Sunday Ticket exclusive. You’ve got to ask yourself it that’s worth the extra bucks. On the other hand, Dish Network offers some channels that DirecTV doesn’t like 65 Sirius music channels and availability in 19 languages.

Dish Network vs. DirecTV: Free and Not-So-Free Stuff

DirecTV advertises that their DVR is $100 off, and it is – but that’s with using a rebate coupon, and we all know how that goes. You’ll spend the money up front and if you remember to send in the rebate coupon, you’ll get you $100 back in a few months. Plus you still have to pay $6 a month to have the DVR. With Dish Network, the DVR really is free and you only pay about $6 a month for the DVR service. More cons for DirecTV. Reading the fine print, you’ll find that although the equipment is “free,” you’ll still have to pay a shipping charge of $19.99.
